The SAIW is home to one of only two RealWeld simulators in the country , which uses virtual reality technology to test student skills on actual and simulated welds. Students can practice, troubleshoot and master welding techniques while reducing programme material costs, including welding plate, electrode or wire and shielding gas. With audio coaching and instructor review of objective scores on five welding parameters, students can speed up their comprehension and training time and acquire a greater understanding and mastery of techniques which results in higher certification rates. In this way, it allows for the screening of potential welders for employment at a fraction of the cost of fabricators doing actual weld tests.
