Career changes are rarely easy, particularly when they involve moving from one specialised industry into another. Yet for SAIW student Luthfia Reddy, the transition from aviation to welding inspection has proven not only possible, but surprisingly complementary.
After spending many years building a successful career in the aviation sector, Luthfia has embarked on a new professional journey through welding inspection. While the industries may appear vastly different at first glance, she quickly discovered that both are built on the same foundations: safety, quality, compliance and an unwavering attention to detail.
Originally from Verulam on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, Luthfia grew up in a close-knit community where hard work, perseverance and determination were highly valued. Those qualities would become defining characteristics throughout her professional career.
Her working life began in aviation, where she joined British Airways and gained experience within a highly regulated and customer-focused environment. Over time, she progressed through various operational and compliance-related roles, developing expertise in safety management, quality assurance, risk assessment, auditing and regulatory compliance.
A focused mindset
These experiences provided far more than industry-specific knowledge. They instilled a mindset centred on precision, accountability and adherence to standards, qualities that would later become invaluable in her new career path.
“Throughout my aviation career, I worked in environments where precision, accountability and adherence to procedures were essential,” she explains. “These are principles that are equally important within the inspection and engineering sector.”
One of the defining moments in her aviation career came during the Covid-19 pandemic when she became part of a team tasked with launching a new airline from the ground up. At a time when the global aviation industry was facing unprecedented uncertainty, the project demanded resilience, adaptability and a relentless commitment to safety and compliance.
As part of the startup team, Luthfia helped establish operational processes, support regulatory compliance and develop systems required for a successful airline launch. The project was ultimately a success and remains one of the most rewarding achievements of her professional life.
A new challenge
Yet despite a successful aviation career, she felt increasingly drawn towards expanding her technical expertise and exploring opportunities within engineering and inspection. Welding inspection, with its blend of technical knowledge, quality assurance and safety management, offered an exciting new challenge.
An important influence in this decision was her husband, who has extensive experience within the welding and inspection field. Through his work, she gained insight into the profession and developed a deeper appreciation for the critical role that welding inspection and quality control play in ensuring safety, reliability and operational excellence across industries.
“What attracted me most was the opportunity to combine my existing strengths with new technical knowledge and skills,” she says. “I saw welding inspection as a profession that offers continuous learning, professional growth and the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to industry standards and excellence.”
World-class training
To begin this transition, Luthfia enrolled at the SAIW, completing both the Introduction to Welding course and Welding Inspection Level 1. She is currently preparing to continue with Welding Inspection Level 2.
For her, selecting the SAIW was an easy decision. “I chose the SAIW because it is widely recognised as a leader in welding and inspection training. Its qualifications are respected throughout the industry, and the training is aligned with internationally accepted standards.”
The move into welding inspection has not been without challenges. Entering a completely new technical environment meant mastering unfamiliar terminology, welding processes, fabrication practices, inspection techniques, codes and standards. It required a willingness to start learning again and embrace a steep learning curve. However, it is precisely this challenge that has made the journey so rewarding.
Career synergies
Luthfia believes one of the most interesting discoveries has been the remarkable overlap between aviation and welding inspection. Both industries operate within highly regulated environments where safety, quality management, documentation, risk management and compliance are non-negotiable. The skills she developed over years in aviation have transferred naturally into her studies and emerging inspection career.
There is another important parallel. Both aviation and welding have traditionally been male-dominated industries. Having already built a successful career in aviation, Luthfia was familiar with the challenges that women can sometimes face in underrepresented environments. She believes professionalism, competence and a commitment to continuous learning remain the most effective ways to build credibility and earn respect.
Her message to other women considering careers in welding or inspection is straightforward: believe in your abilities and never allow stereotypes to define your potential. “There is a place for women in every industry, and with determination and commitment, they can build successful and rewarding careers,” she says.
Looking ahead, Luthfia plans to continue building her technical expertise after completing Welding Inspection Level 2. Her immediate goal is to pursue her IPE qualification and continue progressing through the industry’s professional development pathways. Ultimately, she hopes to establish herself as a highly skilled and respected inspection professional known for maintaining high standards and promoting quality excellence.
Her story serves as a powerful reminder that career paths do not always follow a straight line. Sometimes the skills developed in one industry can unlock opportunities in another. For Luthfia, the journey from aviation to welding inspection has not been about starting over. It has been about building on a strong foundation and applying those same principles of safety, quality and excellence in an entirely new arena.
