Celebrating SA’s Indestructible Women with free NDT training!

In a significant move to celebrate Women’s Month and empower female professionals in the field of
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), the South African Institute of Welding (SAIW) and the Nuclear Energy
Corporation of South Africa (NECSA), with sponsorship and facilitation from the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA), are offering a groundbreaking training opportunity. This initiative is designed
to enhance skills and foster the careers of female NDT technicians through comprehensive Ultrasonic
Testing (UT) courses, at no cost.

Additional Support and Resources

Selected individuals will receive additional resources and opportunities to help them prepare for these classes and maximise the benefits of this training. Specific dates and details will be provided to those selected.

Certification and Costs

The training and examination costs are entirely covered, though participants are responsible for their logistical expenses, including travel, accommodation, and meals. The courses will be held at the SAIW Campus in City West, Johannesburg.

Upon gaining the relevant experience, participants will be eligible for ISO 9712 Certification, which will require an administrative process but will not incur any cost for the initial certification and is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025.

Eligibility and Application Process

To be eligible, applicants should preferably be UT Level 2 certified with relevant experience. This opportunity is exclusively available to female NDT technicians in honour of Women’s Month. Only ten places are available for the 2024 courses.

A second opportunity will be available in the first half of 2025, encouraging individuals not yet eligible to gain their UT Level 2 Certification, in preparation for the 2025 intake and joining the team of leaders in Ultrasonic Testing on the African continent. The 2025 courses are expected to be held at NECSA’s Nuclear School of Excellence.

Application Requirements

Interested candidates must apply by August 19, 2024, by emailing the following details to jansenh@saiw.co.za with the email subject line “UT PA & TOFD”:

1. Name & Surname
2. Contact details
3. Current UT Level 2 Certification
4. Experience Log for the last 2 years
5. CV (Optional)

Selection Process

If more than ten submissions are received by August 19, an additional selection criterion will be implemented. Applicants will need to submit a written UT instruction for testing a single ‘V’ plate by August 26, with details provided on August 19. The final selection, based on technical evaluation by the SAIW NDT Scheme Sub-committee members, will be announced by August 31.

Selections are final, and no further communication will be entertained once the decision is made. A formal letter will be issued by the SAIW requesting companies to allow selected individuals to participate as per the stipulated dates. Due to the use of international specialists, no date modifications or transfers to the 2025 group will be possible.
