It is with deep sadness that the SAIW announces the passing of Mr Mark Digby, a dedicated lecturer, respected Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) specialist, mentor and colleague.
Mark served the SAIW with distinction and professionalism for many years. He was more than an educator. He was a custodian of technical knowledge whose commitment to the discipline of NDT was evident in every lecture he presented and every student he supported. His expertise was built on extensive industry experience, and he brought that practical understanding into the classroom with clarity and purpose.
Mark had a rare ability to make complex technical principles accessible. Whether explaining ultrasonic wave behaviour, guiding students through radiographic interpretation, or detailing penetrant and magnetic particle testing procedures, he approached each subject with precision and patience. He ensured that students not only understood the theory but were prepared to apply it responsibly in the field.
In his classroom at the SAIW, Mark maintained high standards. He expected discipline, focus and professionalism, and in return he gave his time, guidance and unwavering support. Many technicians and inspectors who completed their NDT training at the SAIW attribute their technical competence and professional confidence to his mentorship.
Industry wide influence
His contribution extended well beyond formal instruction. Through his work, Mark strengthened industry standards and reinforced the importance of integrity, accuracy and ethical responsibility in NDT practice. He understood that the role of an NDT professional carries significant responsibility for safety and quality, and he instilled that understanding in every learner he trained.
To his colleagues, Mark was dependable, knowledgeable and generous with his expertise. To his students, he was a steady and trusted mentor. He carried himself with humility and a quiet commitment to excellence that earned him lasting respect within the NDT community.
While his passing is a great loss to the SAIW and the broader NDT fraternity, his legacy remains. It lives on in every technician he trained, every inspector he certified, and every professional who continues to apply the knowledge and standards he championed.
On behalf of the SAIW management, colleagues, students and the wider NDT community, we extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Mark’s contribution to the SAIW and to the field of NDT will never be forgotten.
