Welcome to the latest issue of the SAIW Fusion eNewsletter which highlights just some of the work we do on a daily basis championing the skill of welding as a key enabler of the South African economy. Each quarter we round up some of the key content we’ve produced to keep you informed and even entertained and this month is no different! The articles in this issue include news on our rationalised course offering for 2023 as well as the launch of a shorter, sharper international welding qualification for experienced welders and profiles on a range of staff and bursary winners to tell you the real-life, ‘stories of success about the people who make our industry great.

SAIW LAUNCHES FAST TRACK INTERNATIONAL
WELDER QUALIFICATION FOR EXPERIENCED WELDERS
The SAIW is proud to announce the launch of an exciting new streamlined international welder qualification via the fast tracked IIW Standard Diploma for experienced welders that’s designed to lower the barriers to entry and thereby boost the number of global international welders in the world.
This will grow the number of international welders in South Africa and across the African continent so that we no longer have to source foreign welders but rather utilise local welders who are internationally qualified in a certain process…

SAIW LAUNCHES FOCUSED APPROACH TO 2023 COURSE OFFERING
The aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic and resultant shifts in student numbers and their availability have seen the SAIW rationalise its current approach so that although the number of scheduled courses we offer remains exactly the same, the number of times these particular courses are offered through the year has been reduced to provide a more streamlined offering. In line with this more focused approach, we are therefore proud to launch our courses for 2023!

SAIW CHAMPIONS AFRICA SCHOOL OF NUCLEAR EXCELLENCE
The Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW) is championing the formation of an Africa School of Nuclear Excellence in co-operation with the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA). As part of this drive, the SAIW hosted a delegation of approximately 60 delegates for the launch of this year’s Nuclear Energy Management Schools (NEMS) programme (NEMS2022).
The proposed school will focus on practical welding, welding inspection and technology, technical services and non-destructive testing in the field of exotic materials or configurations used in the design, construction, commissioning, in-service inspection, maintenance, refurbishment and decommissioning cycle of nuclear plants…

BURSARY WINNER – A PASSION FOR THE CRAFT OF WELDING WINS THE DAY!
The winner of our R60 000 regional Level 1 Inspector Course Izak Van Heerden says he never imagined that he could win a bursary. “I have been neglected and rejected in my life, especially in school and was told I would be a nobody.” Despite this, Izak has forged a successful start to his career in welding and with the SAIW bursary opportunity, is now looking forward to overseeing large welding projects and possibly going into teaching one day, to “help young welders believe in themselves and become somebody”…

BURSARY WINNERS (JOHANNESBURG) – AGAINST THE ODDS
The SAIW has announced the three winners of its Gauteng NDT Bursary that will see the students enjoying world-class training at the institute starting in October this year. SAIW Executive Director John Tarboton explains that initially only one bursary was offered but he says; “the standard of the entrants was so high that we only felt it fair to award three bursaries, as it was impossible to choose and we managed to secure funding for an additional three bursaries.” To highlight the incredible winners take a look at out here profiles below which clearly illustrate the calibre of South African welding students and their strong desire to succeed against the odds…
