Raising the Bar: SAIW Celebrates Student Success in Advanced Tube Welding
Yet another ‘Story of Success’ from our training courses with the news that one of our current students Marku Ernst, has successfully attained the International Tube Welder (Comprehensive Level) Qualification, one of the most advanced certifications available in the field.
This achievement highlights Marku’s commitment to excellence, and the effectiveness of the SAIW’s training programmes in preparing welders for critical roles across high-demand sectors such as power generation, petrochemicals and industrial infrastructure. The qualification positions Marku to take on advanced tube welding projects to international standards, reinforcing SAIW’s role in developing world-class welding professionals for the local and global market.
Building skills that power industry
Marku’s journey began in Pretoria, where he was born and raised. After completing primary school at Constantia Park and progressing through Garsfontein and Duo Edu High Schools, he faced early setbacks. The COVID-19 pandemic and financial difficulties temporarily delayed his entry into welding training. But he never let that stall his vision.
“I’ve always had a vision to become an internationally certified welder on all levels, especially in pipeline welding and no matter the challenges, I knew I’d get there,” says Marku.
That determination brought him to the SAIW, where he began studying welding theory and practical skills under the guidance of industry professionals including Senior Lecturer Dennis Bell. To date, Marku has completed key theoretical modules, including Stick Welding theory and Books A, B, and C, and is currently progressing through the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) theory module. His achievement of the International Tube Welder Qualification signifies that he has demonstrated full competence in advanced pipe welding techniques across a variety of positions and materials.
This qualification is also more than just a credential; it’s a passport to opportunity as it equips welders with the expertise required for complex pipe welding projects across multiple industries. In the South African context, this includes vital sectors such as oil and gas, energy generation, petrochemicals, mining, manufacturing, construction, and water infrastructure. As industries expand and critical infrastructure is maintained or upgraded, certified welders like Marku are essential to ensuring quality, safety, and long-term reliability.
“I chose the SAIW because they open doors across the world,” Marku explains. “The training here is real. It’s tough, but it prepares you for anything.”
At the SAIW’s Practical Welding School, Marku developed his hands-on skills in the Institute’s 34-Bay Practical Welding School. He credits the institute’s resources, facilities, and support for giving him the edge. His biggest technical hurdle came in mastering the 6G stick welding position, a demanding test of precision and control but with perseverance and focus, he succeeded.
“It pushed me hard, but I never give up. I stay motivated because this is what I want to do with my life,” he stresses.
Discipline, drive & a vision for the future
A typical day for Marku starts early. He wakes at 05:00 and travels using the Gautrain from Centurion to Rosebank, followed by a short Uber ride to the SAIW’s City West campus. Training begins at 07:30 and runs through to 14:30, with a midday break. In his free time, he balances discipline and self-improvement through regular gym sessions and a growing interest in financial trading.
While still at the start of his professional career, Marku already carries valuable lessons with him. “Don’t let failure or challenges define you and change your vision or your dream,” he says.
Looking ahead, he plans to continue his training across all welding processes available at SAIW. With international certification now in hand, Marku Ernst is focused on building his career, expanding his skill set, and earning his place among the top professionals in the welding industry, locally and globally.
