UT Level III

UT III Technologist should be competent to perform and direct NDT operations for which a candidate is qualified and certified. Level III personnel must demonstrated that they are competent to evaluate and interpret results in terms of existing standards, codes, and specifications; have sufficient practical knowledge of applicable materials, fabrication, process, and product technology to select NDT methods, establish NDT techniques, and assist in establishing acceptance criteria where none are otherwise available; and have a general familiarity with other NDT methods.

UT III Technologist must be competent to assume full responsibility for a test facility or examination centre and staff; to establish, review for editorial and technical correctness, validate NDT instructions and procedures; to interpret standards, codes, specifications, and procedures; to designate the particular test methods, procedures, and NDT instructions to be used; to carry out and supervise all tasks at all levels and to provide guidance for NDT personnel at all levels.

Prior to attending the UT III, candidates are required to attend the Basic NDT III training course followed by passing the Basic NDT III qualification examination. Following the successful completion of the UT III training programme, candidates will be eligible to write the qualification examination conducted by the Personnel Certification Body, where after industrial experience of 18 months (if the candidate has relevant tertiary qualifications) can be gained towards personnel certification.

General Theory

Comprehensive knowledge relating to the physical principles of ultrasound and propagation, isotropic and anisotropic materials, various modes and their properties, advanced method, testing systems, probes and, technical parameters

Specific Theory

Develop and validate NDT codes and procedures / Ultrasonic testing in accordance with codes and procedures / Typical defects and their origins / Testing conditions / Quality, operational and functionality checks / System calibration and verification / Safety and environmental considerations / Interpret, evaluate and report / NDT report compilation /

Practical Skills

Procedure validation / compilation

Access Conditions

Candidate shall be qualified i.e. received training in accordance with ISO9712: 2012 requirements and have passed the Level 2 qualification examinations (certified is preferred) as a Level 2 NDT Technician in the applicable method and sector, appropriate tertiary qualifications (relevant to the NDT method – chemistry, mathematics or physics; and / or to the product or industry
sector – chemistry, metallurgy, engineering etc.) are advantageous.

All candidates for Level 3 Certification in any NDT method shall have successfully completed the Level 2 Practical exam. (If not certified as Level 2, the practical examination shall have been passed within 1 year from date of writing the Level 3 main method examination)

Valid Level 2 Certificate in the applicable method and sector is mandatory when equipment operation or accepting tested components are required

Direct Access to Level 3:
Combination of Level 1, 2 and 3 Training hours in accordance with an approved syllabus and training program as per ISO 9712 : 2012 and SAQCC NDT requirements and based on Certification body verification. The Level 2 qualification examinations shall also have been successfully passed. No reduction in requirements for industrial experience. Suitable tertiary qualifications (relevant to the NDT method – chemistry, mathematics or physics; and / or to the product or industry sector – chemistry, metallurgy, engineering etc.) are mandatory.
