RT III Technologist should be competent to perform and direct NDT operations for which a candidate is qualified and certified. Level III personnel must demonstrate a competence to evaluate and interpret results in terms of existing standards, codes, and specifications; have sufficient practical knowledge of applicable materials, fabrication, process, and product technology to select NDT methods, establish NDT techniques, and assist in establishing acceptance criteria where none are otherwise available; and have a general familiarity with other NDT methods.
RT III Technologist must be competent to assume full responsibility for a test facility or examination centre and staff; to establish, review for editorial and technical correctness, and validate NDT instructions and procedures; to interpret standards, codes, specifications, and procedures; to designate the particular test methods, procedures, and NDT instructions to be used; to carry out and supervise all tasks at all levels and to provide guidance for NDT personnel at all levels.
Prior to attending the RT III, candidates are required to attend the Basic NDT III training course followed by passing the Basic NDT III qualification examination. Following the successful completion of the RT III training programme, candidates will be eligible to write the qualification examination conducted by the Personnel Certification Body, where after industrial experience of 18 months (if the candidate has relevant tertiary qualifications) can be gained towards personnel certification.

Comprehensive knowledge relating to the physical principles of electromagnetic radiation, generation and properties of X- and Gamma rays; Electron and Neutron radiography, ionisation, interaction with matter, film and digital detection systems, equipment and consumables
