Ultrasonic Testing (UT) : Austenitic Stainless Steel (UT 2.9) : ISO 9712 : 2012

Overview

Austenitic stainless steel has recently gained in popularity due to problems experienced with the common types of steel that tend to corrode and give way in tough weather conditions. Austenitic stainless steel is therefore suited for use in the modern day industry where the demand is for precision in all aspects. It is extensively used for pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pipework, tanks and columns.

Ultrasonic operators with a SAQCC Level 2 ultrasonic testing operators certificate (for butt welds in plate and pipe), as well as at least 9 months' post-certification experience, involved or intending to be involved with the examination of welded austenitic stainless steel components, should apply for this course.

ACCESS CONDITIONS

Industrial experience of 9 months, which is required for certification, may be obtained either prior to or after training is completed.

Course duration: 80 hours

COURSE CONTENT

THEORY:
  • Propagation of ultrasound
  • Reflection, refraction and mode conversion
  • Proving characteristics
  • Material properties
  • Austenitic stainless steel welds
  • Influence on ultrasound inspection
  • Equipment, calibration and procedures
  • Examination and sizing techniques
PRACTICAL:
  • Perform ultrasonic inspection of welded austenitic stainless steel components and record the findings of the test
OUTCOME OF TRAINING

Successful candidates will be able to -

  • Organise and select the necessary equipment for a given application
  • Understand and advise on the limitations of ultrasonic testing of austenitic components
  • Execute and supervise practical testing under workshop and field conditions
  • Write technique sheets in accordance with a given code, standard or specification
  • Record testing data and acceptability of results according to specified acceptance criteria

TRAINING EVALUATION

The candidates' understanding of the course contents is assessed on a daily basis.  Theory and practical tasks combined with homework assignments are used to track the candidates' progress. Satisfactory attendance and completion of all assignments would result in a written training record being issued at the end of the training course.

QUALIFICATION EXAMINATION

The qualification examination consists of a specific and practical paper in accordance with the SAQCC (NDT) requirements for UT 2.9 welds in austenitic stainless steels, or alternatively, examination according to SNT-TC-1A requirements. Passing the qualification examination, combined with the required industrial experience, would make the candidate eligible for certification according to ISO 9712.
