Requirements for certification of SAQCC Competent Persons

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAQCC-CP QUALIFICATION EXAMINATION

Entrance requirements for applicants for the qualification examination as an SAQCC-Competent Person

  • Every candidate must have completed an approved Competent Persons training course for the scope required, to the satisfaction of the Approved Training Body responsible for the course.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION

Requirements for applicants for initial certification as an SAQCC-Competent Person are:

  • All applicants must provide evidence of visual acuity, tested within the previous six months
  • Such that the applicant is able to read J1 (or N5) sized letters of the standard Jaeger or equivalent test chart at 300mm and J7 (or N10) at 1000mm and of at least 6/6 on a Snellen chart or orthorator with at least one eye, corrected or uncorrected
  • Provide evidence of having clinically assessed normal fields of vision and have passed the relevant examination for the certification scope applied for

FURTHER REQUIREMENTS

Route 1

N2 or less

Plus

  • Five (5) years experience/training in inspection and testing of steam generators and/or pressure vessels, during which period the applicant must have carried out supervised and documented inspection and testing on ten (10) steam generators or ten (10) pressure vessels
  • Evidence of this testing and inspection must be verifiable and must be supported by relevant documentation

Route 2

Matric/N3/Gr 12, N4 or N5 in mechanical engineering/metallurgy or other relevant engineering qualifications

Plus

  • Three (3) years experience/training in inspection and testing of steam generators and/or pressure vessels, during which period the applicant must have carried out supervised and documented inspection and testing on ten (10) steam generators or ten (10) pressure vessels
  • Evidence of this testing and inspection must be verifiable and must be supported
  • Route 3

    Technikon, S4, N6/S3, B.Tech, GCC, IPE or relevant degree in Mechanical Engineering/Metallurgy or other relevant engineering qualification

    Plus

    • One (1) years experience/training in inspection and testing of steam generators and/or pressure vessels, during which period the applicant must have carried out supervised and documented inspection and testing on ten (10) steam generators or ten (10) pressure vessels

    APPLICATION FOR CERTIFICATION

    Each applicant for initial certification shall complete an application form, which will include:

    • The desired certification scope
    • Authenticated details of any other relevant qualification
    • Evidence of visual acuity tested within the previous six months
    • Evidence of having clinically assessed normal fields of vision
    • Two passport size photographs
    • Authenticated details of any relevant qualifications and
    • Personal information on the applicant.
    • In conjunction with this application form, each applicant will be supplied with an information sheet, detailing the applicant's rights of appeal and complaint with reference to qualification.

    MAINTENANCE OF SAQCC COMPETENT PERSON CERTIFICATION

    Initial certification of Competent Persons will be valid for three (3) years from the date of initial certification, renewable for a further two periods of three (3) years, provided that the holder:

    • Is able to demonstrate, that he/she has maintained his/her level of competence by providing authenticated evidence of continuous work activity in steam generators or pressure vessel inspection and testing and that he/she has kept up to date in steam generators or pressure vessel regulations and inspection methods by submission of an authenticated continuing professional development record covering the period of validity of the certificate
    • Can provide evidence of visual acuity testing within the previous six months:
    • Such that the applicant is able to read J1 (or N5) sized letters of the standard Jaeger or equivalent test chart at 300mm and J7 (or N10) at 1000mm and of at least 6/6 on a Snellen chart or orthorator with at least one eye, corrected or uncorrected
    • Having clinically assessed normal fields of vision

    Recertification is required after nine (9) years from the date of initial certification and is achieved by the certificate holder passing a limited recertification examination on:

    • The relevant legislation and regulations governing new construction of steam generators or pressure vessels, and
    • Inspection and test methods prior to the expiry of his/her certificate

    This is in addition to the conditions required for the three (3) and six (6) year renewal.

    On completion of each nine (9) year renewal/recertification cycle, the periodic maintenance of the certification starts again as described in this document.
