Course overview and target group
 

The course is designed for:

  • Trainee NDT operators intending on a career in non-destructive testing
  • Engineering personnel who are responsible for integrity of mechanical equipment
  • Welding inspection personnel
  • Quality assurance personnel

Course Duration: 10 days
Examination Duration: 1 day

Access conditions

Level 1 MT and PT: Standard 8/Grade 10 with mathematics and science.
Level 1 RT: Matric with mathematics, science and radiation safety.
Level 1 UT: Matric with mathematics and science.
Applicants for Level 2 courses must have passed the relevant SAIW Certification Level 1 qualification exam.
Level 3: Eligibility for examination is as per ISO 9712.
Proof of eligibility to be submitted to SAQCC.

To be eligible for Radiographic Testing Level 1, you must have first done Radiation Safety and passed the exam.
To receive Radiation Safety Certification, successful completion of Radiographic Testing Level 1 is mandatory.

Course content

THEORY:

  • Introduction and principles of radiography
  • Structure of the atom
  • X-ray and gamma ray equipment
  • Interaction of radiation with matter
  • Sensitivity, density and contrast
  • Radiographic screens, cassettes and exposure charts
  • Exposure techniques and discontinuities
  • Radiation hazards, measurement of radiation and protection from exposure
  • Regulatory requirements and safe use of radioactive material

Practical:

  • Set up the equipment, expose a sample, develop the film and interpret the results
Outcome of training

Successful students will be able to:

  • Identify, recognise and select the correct equipment to perform radiographic exposure
  • Set up the equipment to conduct a radiographic exposure
  • Carry out the radiographic exposure
  • Maintain a darkroom and process a radiographic film
  • Determine density and sensitivity
  • Recognise and identify artifacts and defects on radiographs
  • Complete a standard report form
Training evaluation

Specific and general examination papers followed by a practical test according to the SAQCC (NDT) requirement for Level 1 RT, or alternatively, examination according to SNT-TC-1A requirements.
