Painting Inspector
This course is geared towards coating applicator inspectors and welding inspectors who wish to increase their knowledge and become dual purpose inspectors. The course is also suited to other interested personnel who wish to gain an introduction to coating inspection as part of a wider plan to enter the corrosion protection field.
Course Duration: 4 days
Examination Duration: 1 days
Candidates should have a Grade 10 qualification (minimum) plus relevant experience in a maintenance environment.
Training Session
The training session is a presentation of the basic technology of coating application and inspection. The objectives are to give the trainee inspector the knowledge and skills necessary for typical inspection work on projects involving painting of steel.
Session Format
The session involves lectures and demonstrations, with hands-on training using equipment and instruments in a classroom environment for the theoretical aspects and in a workshop for practical demonstrations and student exercises.
THEORY:
- Basics of corrosion mechanisms
- Importance of environment related to corrosion
- Welding features affecting coating life
- Surface contaminants and how to deal with them
- Surface finish requirements prior to paint application
- Coating systems for paints, functions and properties
- Design and fabrication features affecting paint coating integrity
- Inspection of substrates prior to painting and finishing paint coatings
PRACTICAL:
- Perform visual inspections and carry out tests using calibrated instruments on a variety of samples
- Complete report forms
Successful students will have:
- The knowledge and skills necessary for typical inspection work
- Understanding of the requirements for surface preparation and application of paint coating systems to steel substrates
Practical and theoretical evaluation to SAQCC Level 1 requirements.
Minimum: 4
Maximum: 12
