Course overview and target group
 

The course is designed for:

  • Trainee NDT operators intending on a career in non-destructive testing
  • Engineering personnel who are responsible for integrity of mechanical equipment
  • Welding inspection personnel
  • Quality assurance personnel

Course Duration: 4 days
Examination Duration: 1 day

Access conditions

Level 1 MT and PT: Standard 8/Grade 10 with mathematics and science.
Level 1 RT: Matric with mathematics, science and radiation safety.
Level 1 UT: Matric with mathematics and science.
Applicants for Level 2 courses must have passed the relevant SAIW Certification Level 1 qualification exam.
Level 3: Eligibility for examination is as per ISO 9712.
Proof of eligibility to be submitted to SAQCC.

To be eligible for Radiographic Testing Level 1, you must have first done Radiation Safety and passed the exam.
To receive Radiation Safety Certification, successful completion of Radiographic Testing Level 1 is mandatory.

Course content

THEORY:

  • Principles and characteristics of magnetic particle
  • Inspection equipment and materials
  • Classification of discontinuities
  • Discontinuities and their origin
  • Selection of test techniques
  • Interpretation of code requirements
  • Interpretation of acceptance criteria

PRACTICAL:

  • Perform a magnetic particle test in accordance with a technique sheet
  • Compile a written instruction for a Level 1 to follow
  • Comment on the finds of the test
  • Complete a report form
  • Accept and reject in accordance with provided codes, standards and specifications
Outcome of training

Successful students will be able to:

  • Organise, select and calibrate the necessary equipment for a given application
  • Evaluate and advise on the possibilities and limitations of a testing method
  • Execute and supervise practical testing under workshop and field conditions
  • Record testing data and evaluate acceptability of results according to specific acceptance criteria
  • Compile a written instruction for approval that complies with a given code, standard or specification
  • Record testing data and evaluate acceptability of results according to codes, standards and specifications
Training evaluation

Specific and general examination papers followed by a practical test according to the SAQCC (NDT) requirement for Level 2 MT, or alternatively, examination according to SNT-TC-1A requirements.
