Course overview and target group
 

This course is designed for welding personnel who are already active in job functions such as supervision, instructors and technical sales.

 

Access conditions

Route 1

Matric Senior Certificate or N3 qualification including mathematics and science.

Route 2

A qualified, professional worker in a metalworking profession with a minimum of three years experience and who has successfully completed the International Welding Specialist Qualification Level 0.

Course content

THEORY:

  • Welding processes and equipment
  • Materials and their behaviour during welding
  • Construction and design
  • Fabrication applications engineering

PRACTICAL:

  • Does not aim at practical skills but at gaining knowledge on the control of the different welding processes, difficulties and typical defects associated with the incorrect use of different welding methods and consumables.
Outcome of training

Successful students will:

  • Understand in general, the basics of electricity in relation to the requirements of welding technology and also key electronic components used in power sources
  • Understand the principles of carbon contents, addition of alloys, crystal structures and their representation in phase and transformation diagrams
  • Understand basic metallurgy of steels, testing of materials and heat treatments
  • Weldability of different alloys and problem-solving
  • Understand the weldability of metals under different loads and the design of welded structures
  • Identify the different non-destructive testing methods and repair methods
