Course overview and target group
 

This course is designed for persons wishing to qualify in welding at the Technologist level, as well as workshop personnel with welding coordinator responsibilities.

 

Access conditions

Candidates must hold a National Diploma in Engineering or an equivalent qualification.

Course content

THEORY:

  • Welding processes and equipment
  • Materials and their behaviour during welding
  • Construction and design
  • Fabrication applications engineering
  • Fundamental practical skills

PRACTICAL:

  • Interpretation of welding drawings and specifications
  • Verification of welder and procedure qualifications
  • Interpretation of test results and collation of reports and records
  • Correct selection of test samples and the correct application of NDT methods
Outcome of training

Successful students will possess an intimate knowledge of welding and how to apply this in the areas of:

  • Non-destructive testing, mechanical testing and visual inspection techniques
  • Inspection procedures, material specifications and metallurgy
  • Engineering drawings, joint fit up, consumables and workmanship tolerances
  • Preparation and application of welding procedure specifications and procedures
  • Welding equipment functionality and quality control plans
  • Identification of weld imperfections associated with pre-production, fabrication and post fabrication
  • Inspection requirements based on national specifications or codes
