Access conditions

90% attendance at an SAIW Certification approved IWE training course run by an Approved Training Body (ATB)

Content: Theory

Closed book examinations to be written on completion of each module made up of 50% narrative and 50% multiple choice questions and covering the scope of each module.

Scope of examinations

Module 1: Welding processes and equipment
Module 2: Materials and their behaviour during welding
Module 3: Construction and design
Module 4: Fabrication, applications engineering

Duration of examinations

Theory: 2 hours minimum per module

Minimum pass mark

Theory: 60% in each module

Note:
In addition to the theory examinations, there is a mandatory oral examination to test the candidates understanding and ability to reason in the field of welding. The total time for the oral examination, covering all four modules, is a minimum of one hour per candidate.
Candidates achieving a mark in excess of 75% in any module will be exempted from the oral examination in that module.
The oral examination is weighted at 40% of the final mark.
