ASME Codes of Manufacture
Since 1986, the SAIW has held a two week course on the ASME Codes of Manufacture including the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessels Inspection Code.
It has been agreed, in conjunction with the relevant committees, that this course will be included in the modules required for registration as an:
- SAIW Level 111 Welding Inspector
- SAQCC (IPE) Inspector of Pressurised Equipment
The course is specifically designed to introduce students on how to logically and methodically use the relevant code sections.
SAIW staff will lecture the same course as used by the NBIC for personnel aiming to qualify in the categories mentioned below.
This course is also designed for production and maintenance personnel who are responsible for the integrity of pressure vessels and boilers and for welding inspectors wishing to register as inspectors of pressurised equipment.
Course Duration: 9 days
Examination Duration: 2 x 0.5 days
Candidates should have a Grade 10 qualification (minimum) and twelve months welding inspection experience.

- NBIC Practical
- ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 Power Piping
Successful students will be able to use and interpret the relevant codes with regard to:
- Qualification of welders and welding procedures
- Allowable materials
- Design of vessels and boilers
- Strength calculations for openings
- Fabrication requirements
- Inspection and tests
- Marking and reports
- Pressure relief devices
- Duties of inspectors
Theoretical examination in accordance with SAIW requirements for ASME Codes of Construction.
