Personal Membership

The SAIW aims to serve and promote the interests of the welding industry. Our main focus is on training, technical consulting, certification and information services.

Corporate and individual members of the Institute enjoy a wide range of benefits, association with other members and demonstrate their commitment to a professional approach to welding related activities.

There are five types of Personal Members, each category having its own requisites as follows:

1. Fellows ('FSAIW')
Fellows are individuals of scientific or technical eminence, elected to this class in recognition of distinguished contributions to the science or practice of welding.

2. Honorary Life Members ('HonLMSAIW')
Honorary Life Members are individuals who whether they are qualified or not, are elected to this class in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the industry or to the Institute. This being the case, they do not have to apply for membership and are not subject to membership fees.

3. Members ('MSAIW')
A Member is any individual who possesses a minimum of five years of theoretical and/or practical experience in the field of welding, which combined with the relevant qualifications, shows a professional competence in the field of welding.

4. Associate Members ('AMSAIW')
Associate Members are individuals involved in the field of welding, although not necessarily in a hands-on, practical sense.

5. Students ('SMSAIW')
Students are individuals below the age of 25, studying an approved form of training in the industry and who are considered suitable for membership.

  1. Professional recognition through affiliation with the SAIW, signified by an Institute tie and Membership Certificate bearing member’s name.
  2. Reduced rates on seminars and conferences.
  3. Free copies of the Institute Journal, African Fusion and the Fusion Newsletters.
  4. Purchasing of items such as welding gauges, wall charts, books, specifications and codes – all available from the Information Centre at reduced rates to members.
  5. Free access to information:
    • Telephonic advisory service
    • Attendance at monthly evening meetings
    • Current awareness bulletins (welding and NDT) issued quarterly
    • Access to codes and standards and library facilities
  6. Membership fees are tax deductible.
