SAIW is South Africa's member institute of IIW and is active and participative in IIW activities. SAIW is an Authorised National Body of IIW and is able to accredit training organisations to present IIW training programmes covering the full spectrum of qualifications ranging from welder to welding engineer. SAIW is approved to issue IIW diplomas which are recognised globally.

SA industry representatives are involved in most of the IIW Commissions. An IIW Commission is a forum for knowledge exchange and technology transfer and, in total, the commissions produce around 400 technical documents a year and 40 recommended documents in the form of journals and books.
